A Heart Transformed by Grace

Welcome to Christianity.com. My name is Kyle Norman, and I am the priest at Saint Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Kamloops, BC, Canada. I am a Christian, and here is how that came to be.

When I was born, I had a rare heart condition called Transposition of the Great Arteries. This meant the two main arteries in my heart were reversed, causing oxygenated blood to circulate incorrectly. My skin was deep blue, a sign of something gravely wrong. At the time, this condition was deemed “incompatible with life.” I endured multiple surgeries to survive until the next stage. At six months old, I underwent open-heart surgery. To put that into perspective, this was surgery on a heart no bigger than a golf ball. Despite the incredible challenges and low success rates, the surgery worked. Now, 45 years later, I live relatively complication-free with this rare condition.

Though I could focus on the skilled hands of surgeons, I’ve always known that something that went beyond medical explanation happened on that operating table. It wasn’t until high school while reading Jeremiah 1:5—“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I set you apart”—that everything clicked for me. At that moment, I realized God’s hand had been on my life since the beginning. Jesus saves, and that is as much a physical truth as a spiritual one. This reality has shaped my life and my faith.

Be blessed today, and remember to visit Christianity.com regularly. God isn’t done with me, you, or our stories. May you walk in the knowledge of His deep and abiding love. Amen.
