The Washington D.C. National Guard will remain stationed in the nation’s capital at least through February 28, according to formal orders reviewed by The Associated Press.
The extension comes under President Donald Trump’s August emergency order, which directed the “Secretary of War” to protect federal property and support local law enforcement in the city.
Hundreds of Guard members continue to patrol public spaces across Washington, D.C., while also assisting with cleanup and other community maintenance duties.
The deployment extension underscores ongoing security and operational support in the nation’s capital, keeping Guard members on duty for several additional months.
President Donald Trump is warning the Supreme Court could leave the United States “defenseless” if it strikes down the sweeping tariffs he imposed this year, but legal experts say he still has multiple ways to keep taxing imports aggressively.
Trump claims his emergency powers give him near-limitless authority to set tariffs, but justices appeared skeptical during Wednesday’s hearing. Even if the court rules against him, Trump could use other laws, including Section 301 of the Trade Act to counter unfair trade practices, Section 232 for national security tariffs, and even the nearly century-old Smoot-Hawley law.
Tariffs have become a cornerstone of Trump’s second-term economic policy, with rates on imports rising sharply, and the president has framed the measures as essential to protecting American businesses.
The Federal Aviation Administration announced Wednesday that it will reduce air traffic by 10% across 40 “high-volume” markets beginning Friday morning to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown. The agency is confronting staffing shortages caused by air traffic controllers, who are working unpaid, with some calling out of work during the shutdown, resulting in delays across the country. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford says the agency is not going to wait for a problem to act, saying the shutdown is causing staffing pressures and “we can’t ignore it.” Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy say they will meet later Wednesday with airline leaders to figure out how to safely implement the reduction.
In New Jersey, Democratic U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill, a moderate with military experience first elected to Congress in the 2018 midterm election during President Donald Trump's first term, bested Republican businessman and former state lawmaker Jack Ciattarelli, in a race that focused on affordability issues.
In Virginia, Democratic former U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger was elected as the state's first female governor.
Spanberger called for pragmatism, pledged to defend her state's sizeable population of federal workers from targeting by the Trump administration, and listed housing and healthcare affordability as her day-one priorities.
Republican candidate Winsome Earle-Sears, the state's lieutenant governor, played to her conservative base in the election by questioning Spanberger's record.
Federal investigators say a UPS cargo plane’s left wing caught fire and its engine fell off just before a fireball crash after takeoff in Kentucky. The crash and fire Tuesday destroyed the plane and spread to nearby businesses in Louisville, Kentucky. Authorities say at least nine people died and others are missing. Three people were aboard when the plane crashed as it took off for Honolulu from UPS Worldport at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport. Video showed flames on the plane’s left wing and a trail of smoke. Todd Inman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, spoke to reporters Wednesday.
Justice Department prosecutors have been told to produce materials in their criminal case against former FBI director James Comey. A federal judge has given Trump administration prosecutors until the end of Thursday to produce grand jury materials and other evidence seized from an investigation into Comey. His attorney’s said they were at a disadvantage because they’d not been able to review materials gathered years ago. The judge scolded the Justice Department for adopting an “indict first” and investigate second approach. Comey has pleaded not guilty to charges of lying to Congress.
A day after Democrats dominated the first major Election Day since Donald Trump returned to the White House, the president is in Miami to speak at a forum of business leaders and global athletes about what he sees as his economic achievements.
Zohran Mamdani has announced a team including former city and federal officials — all women — to steer his transition to New York City Hall. The new mayor-elect said Wednesday that he will “work every day to honor the trust that I now hold.” He vowed that his administration would be both compassionate and capable. The 34-year-old democratic socialist won Tuesday over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani now faces the task of following through on his ambitious affordability agenda while navigating the bureaucratic challenges of City Hall and a hostile Trump administration.

Emergency workers are searching for more victims after at least nine people died and more than a dozen were injured when a UPS plane crashed while taking off at the airport in Louisville, Kentucky. The plane crashed Tuesday as it was departing for Honolulu from Muhammad Ali International Airport. Video showed flames on the plane’s left wing and a trail of smoke. The plane then lifted slightly off the ground before crashing and exploding in a huge fireball. Video also revealed portions of a building’s shredded roof next to the end of the runway. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear says he expects the death toll to increase and says 16 families reported loved ones unaccounted for. The airport has resumed operations.
Josh Hammer lights into the results from New York, Virginia, and New Jersey, breaking down what they really say about the state of the Republican Party and where the movement goes next. He argues that the results were predictable — and that the GOP’s refusal to adapt could cost them big heading into 2026.
Josh also torches the lazy talking point that New York is “a city of immigrants,” explaining why today’s immigration wave looks nothing like the one that built America’s backbone. Then he digs into the Supreme Court’s high-stakes battle over President Trump’s tariffs, exposing what’s truly on the line for America’s sovereignty, economy, and strength on the world stage.
DEATH TOLL RISES TO SEVEN IN DEADLY UPS PLANE CRASH IN KENTUCKY
Officials have confirmed seven people are dead after a UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said during a news briefing that three crew members were on board the aircraft and that four other victims were on the ground.
“There were three crew members on the plane. The four that we have confirmed dead are not on the plane,” Greenberg said. “We believe it will be seven that we’re aware of at this time.”
Authorities say the crash was likely caused by engine failure during takeoff, sparking a massive fireball that could be seen for miles.
Emergency crews continue to search the crash site, while officials have extended condolences to the victims’ families.
