SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse walk-on quarterback Joe Filardi was expected to start for the Orange on Friday night against North Carolina.

A true freshman and highly regarded lacrosse recruit, Filardi would replace struggling LSU transfer Rickie Collins, who has gone 0-4 as a starter in relief of Steve Angeli. Angeli suffered a season-ending Achilles injury against Clemson. Syracuse was 3-1 under Angeli, who transferred from Notre Dame..

Collins had a total quarterback rating of 24.3, the lowest by a Power-Four quarterback so far this year, and his eight interceptions were tied for the most in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

As a senior quarterback at Half Hollow Hills West in Dix Hills, New York, Filardi completed 137 of 209 passes for 3,115 yards and 43 touchdown passes with three interceptions. He also rushed for more than 1,200 yards and 12 scores.
