A California bill is now making its way to Gov. Jerry Brown's desk after passing the Assembly last week that seeks to limit restaurants to serving children only water or unflavored milk with their meals.

The Hill reports if Brown signs the bill into law, California would be the first state to have such a law although several California cities have already passed similar restrictions, as have other cities across the U.S.

Supporters say it’s an attempt to reduce childhood obesity rates, but it has some parents balking at the idea of the state inserting itself into their parenting.

Restaurants could face fines of up to $500 if they fail to comply with the new bill.
