Longtime business leader Carl Davis Jr. has taken the helm of the Silicon Valley Black Chamber of Commerce, steering the black business community toward economic prosperity and a more prominent role in the tech industry. Davis was appointed President and Executive Director beginning June 1, 2013.
The job is a homecoming for Davis, who has been a member of the chamber since it was created in 1988 by valley businessman Ron McPherson. He started his career in technology and worked as a programmer for IBM for about 15 years before joining the chamber and starting a private practice as a financial adviser. Davis has spent more than two decades working on behalf of African American entrepreneurs, including creating a business incubator program and advocating to change discriminatory lending policies.
Davis’ background includes public and private, profit and non-profit, large Corporate and Small Business. From General Motors, IBM, Morgan Stanley and the Davis Financial Group to BEC, SVBCC and City of San Jose, Davis has covered a lot of terrain when it comes to business.
Looking at and determining if business plans can really become a viable business model is what Davis has done for over 20 years. Davis’ contract with the City of San Jose to provide Entrepreneur and Small Business training in the 90’s broadened his skills, and his team designed and successfully implemented new programs for the city to make an economic impact.
